The history of Rovio Mobile and its most popular game, Angry Birds, goes back to 2003, when Finnish students Niklas Hed, Jarno Väkeväinen, and Kim Dikert were attending the Helsinki University of Technology. After taking part in a mobile game development competition sponsored by Nokia and Hewlett-Packard, the trio came up with King of the Cabbage World, a real-time, multiplayer game for what would now be considered fairly basic smart phones. With encouragement, they sold the game to Digital Chocolate and the game was published. King of the Cabbage World was renamed Mole War, and it became the first commercial real-time multiplayer game available for mobile phones. Later in 2003, the trio formed the company Relude to begin making games under their own name. The company was renamed Rovio in 2005.
Angry Birds was first released in 2009, just as the Android universe started to expand. The game has achieved nearly unprecedented success. With more than 50 million downloads of its various versions, more than 14 million of which are paid, to call Angry Birds simply a hit would be something of a great understatement.

In Angry Birds Rio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio de Janeiro, where they eventually escape their captors and set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel--two rare macaws and the stars of the Fox motion picture, Rio.
